On Thursday, September 4th, Ms. Marjolijn Sonnema, Director-General of Public Health at the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS), paid a working visit to Fundashon Mariadal on Bonaire. It was her first introduction to the organization.
The visit focused on encounters, dialogue, and gaining insight into healthcare practices on the island. Ms. Sonnema spoke with the Board of Directors, the medical staff, and the Supervisory Board, and participated in a tour of various healthcare departments, including the Kas di Kuido nursing home, Acute Care, and the Sentebibu hospital wing.
During the working visit, the delegation gained a broad overview of how Fundashon Mariadal provides care within the context of the Caribbean Netherlands. They focused on the commitment of staff, collaboration between disciplines, and the way nurses play a leading role in care provision and policy.
Fundashon Mariadal’s approach is based on three strategic pillars: nurse-driven, data-driven, and value-driven care. The core values of love, innovation, professionalism, and service are central to these pillars. This vision was clearly expressed in various ways during the visit.
The working visit contributes to strengthening the collaboration between Fundashon Mariadal and the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS). The shared insights will be incorporated into the ongoing dialogue on the future of healthcare on Bonaire.
Fundashon Mariadal looks back with satisfaction on a valuable visit, thanks in part to the dedicated efforts of its staff at all levels.
